Things to know before choosing a makeup school.
1. Who is the instructor?
You will want to know exactly who is your instructor. Ask to see their online portfolio. Do their images look like magazine quality work. Are they still working in the industry? A good makeup artist makes about $650 per day. A lot of schools will hire random makeup artist to teach their classes. They may have a different teacher every month. This does not guarantee that you will get quality education because there are no standards of instruction. I see so many makeup schools that look for teachers on craigslist. It makes me wonder how they can operate a school and provide quality instruction if the owner or at least one of the owners is a successful makeup artist.
At CAMMUA the owner is the teacher and is still actively working in the industry insuring you that you every student will receive the same quality of education each and every time.
2. What’s in the kit?
The most important thing is the kit. What kind of foundation? What brands are in the kit?
At CAMMUA we use the highest industry standard makeup in our kits. The kit you will get is the kit that CAMMUA’s owner uses herself. She hand picks each item and if she feels a better item becomes available she will change it.
3. Beware the schools that promise job placement.
As a makeup artist you have to look for work each day. When a job finishes you have to find the next one. A school may find you a one day job for $50 and claim they have job placement.
At CAMMUA we have career counseling. We tell you how to find work and what steps to take to become a successful makeup artist.
4. What does Certification from CAMMUA provide for me?
A Certificate of completion ensures that an individual has had formal training for the purpose of hygiene and set etiquette. There are certain rules and procedures that are required for makeup artist in the industry. When a certificate is presented this ensures the employer that you have been trained properly. Another value of a certificate is that you can register with MAC makeup, Make Up Forever and other brands for industry discounts.
5. Your final decision.
Don’t just look at one school and say yes this is for me. Look at 2 or 3 in your area and talk to the owner in person. Feel really comfortable about your decision. MEET THE TEACHER. I can not stress this enough. Look at their work, ask them questions. This is a very important decision you are making so make it wisely.
